GraceAnne got to work with Laura in the big gym at St John's. Carnesecca arena and St John's is kind of a legendary place for me.
I still remember Alumni Hall before it was renamed, watching the great Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson, Bill Wennington, Walter Berry final four team, the Georgetown rivalry, Jayson Williams, Willie Glass, Billy Singleton, watching Boo Harvey hit three game winning threes in 88-89, Malik Sealy, Lavor Postell, Erick Barkley, Hamilton and Lopez, Artest, Lou Carnesecca and all his great teams. Afterwards in the car I told Grace how cool I thought it was that she got to work on that legendary floor. She says, "I'm used to it, we worked out there every day last summer during camp with Megan Duffy.". Ok.... well, it was pretty cool for me anyway...
In a 3-2 zone you must pressure the ball with on-ball perimeter defense. This means closing out on the pass, going over screens, trapping the corners and ball denial, post players should be denying the post entry pass (fronting or 3/4 in the post). Defensive rotation is critical as it is in all zone defenses. This can be a fun defense to play that confuses offenses and leads to steals and breaks. It does put pressure on your post players and can expose the corners. Basic Rotations and Positions of the 3-2 (1-2-2) zone Starting Positions Ball on wing: Defender 3 comes out to guard the ball. Defender 1 drops down to the high post area. Ball in corner: Defender 5 goes out to guard the ball. Defender 4 slides over to defend the low post. GraceAnne's CYO team the St Hyacinth Storm is certainly shaping up, things are quickly coming together in practice. Just got the season schedule and the girl's are ready to go. First game the weekend of Oct. 23rd, can't wait! Another great practice!
