Random Late August Thoughts

2008 STORM! They been growing... CYO St Hyacinth Storm basketball begins practice this coming week. GraceAnne has had a lot of fun playing CYO ball the last few years and the team has done very well. Sounds like we will be a bit short handed this year but that should give everyone lots of playing time. Playing up in the 8th grade dvision so that should be challenging! So... GraceAnne's Game7 summer league team finished up their season by losing in the first round of the playoffs to a Unique All-Stars team they beat twice during the regular season. All-Stars went on to win the Championship. Seemed like the other teams continued to improve during the season and peaked during the playoffs. Grace's team had no practices throughout the summer which is definitely a trade-off. I think the last practice was prior to the final AAU tournament in June. The girls did extremely well considering they basically improvised. At times they really did play some absolutely spectacular ball...

Game 7 Rockville Centre Girl's Camp

Image
GraceAnne, Grace Stone, Grace Brady and Amara will be attending the Rockville Centre Game 7 Girl's basketball camp this week. Stone, Woody and Jenna Brown did the same camp last year and had a fantastic time! This year Marc Von Essen has put together a pretty amazing line-up of talented and experienced players to train and coach the girls camp. It's always great for aspiring players to learn from young women who are hard working, accomplished and have been successful. Carrem Gay played for Bob Mackey at Christ The King in Middle Village Queens with Lorin Dixon, Nakeja Kelly, Tina Charles,  and Sky Lindsay where she won the 2005 New York State Class AA Federation Championship averaging 18.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, 5.3 blocks and 4.7 assists in her senior season.  She was selected New York State Miss Basketball as well as a McDonald's All American and is also a member of the National Honor Society. Carrem went on to play four years and receive two degrees at ...

St John's Camp

Image
GraceAnne is having a great time this week at St John's Camp! She likes her teammates and seems to be making lots of new friends. She also says that she has been playing extremely well in the games "I... am... AWESOME... ", and has been getting good instruction. She's talking a lot more about her experience and what happens during the day than she usually does so that's always good. Some of the St John's players and alumni are helping out and Grace has really been enjoying working with them. She is getting to know a few of the girls that we watched play throughout last season. Da'Shena Stevens, 2009 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, 2010 Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region I All-American, Met Basketball Writers' Player of the Year, 3.46 GPA majoring in accounting and finance and also led St. John's in rebounding while scoring 12 points a game. High School Ball

Some interesting things happening. GraceAnne is working out in the hopes of meeting the criteria for selective classification. Selective classification enables middle school kids to try out for varsity and jr varsity teams. Blake did it last year for lacrosse. He was well prepared but when the time came, while he passed he still found it quite difficult. There is no doubt in my mind that GraceAnne could play varsity basketball for Glen Cove High School right now. I've watched the team the last two years and while she might not be a starter she can certainly hold her own with most if not all of the girls currently on the team. However, selective classification itself is no joke! Flexed arm hang, shuttle run, mile and a half run, sit-ups, standing long jump all things that Grace will have to prepare for if she wants to meet the criteria. So far she is pretty close to being able to do what she needs to do. She needs to keep up the hard work so that when the time comes there w...

Kim Barne's Arico Camp 2011

Image
Grace & Grace are attending Kim Barne's Arico Camp at St John's this week. They had a great time at the camp last year and I'm guessing this year will be no different! These two seem to have a lot of fun together so it should be a great week!
