St John's Still Dancing!

Image
Tied 13 times with eight lead changes the Red Storm beats the Oklahoma Sooners by 4 in their own house! How crazy is that! "Overcoming a rowdy Sooners crowd, No. 3 seed St. John's defeated No. 6 seed Oklahoma, 74-70, in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Tuesday night. The Red Storm will take on Duke in the Sweet 16 of the Fresno Regional on Saturday (ESPN, 9 p.m.). "This is one of the greatest moments in our program," Barnes Arico said. "Usually I am super professional, but tonight I wanted to celebrate with my team, because I'm so proud of what they've been able to accomplish." In what amounted to a road game, the Red Storm knocked off the Sooners despite OU shooting 47.9 percent from the field. St. John's overwhelmed OU with its quickness and athleticism, scoring 21 points off 19 turnovers. Point guard Nadirah McKenith was a driving force behind the Red Storm victory. After hitting the game winner to defeat Creight...

St John's v Creighton

Image
What a game! Not what I expected at all until the final play. It was a game of runs with each team countering the other. St John's led most of the way but usually by only a few points, couldn't get separation and Creighton just kept running motion, taking open shots, hanging in there and coming back when they needed it most. Very exciting and extremely well coached by both sides. When you have both teams making runs at one another it's usually matchups but sometimes it's just good recognition on the part of the coaches and the players responding to the shifts in strategy. Creighton hit 7 threes with a bunch coming in the first part of the second half on what seemed like every possession. Nelson got behind the St John's defense a few times early on as well. Creighton's trapping press was also way more effective in slowing down the Red Storm than I thought it would be. St John's was patient, which I didn't expect... just figured Nadirah would rip t...

Hofstra Plays On!

Image
Hofstra Pride to the NIT Congratulations! Nicole Capurso and the Hofstra Pride have made the postseason for just the fourth time in program history. Nicole, Candace Bellocchio, Marie Malone, Shante Evans and the rest of the Pride will face the Harvard Crimson in the first round this Thursday night at The Mack Center in Hempstead. Grace and I should go to that one. Hofstra and Harvard have both played St. John's, Hartford and Princeton this season. Hofstra went 1-2 against those teams, while Harvard compiled a 1-3 record against the same teams. Both the Pride and the Crimson beat St. John's this season. Fans hounding CAA SuperStar Nicole Capurso! Hofstra enters the WNIT with a 19-11 overall record. The Pride will be seeking its fourth-ever 20-win season at the NCAA Division I level with a victory in the WNIT. Led by junior forward Shante Evans, Hofstra notched wins over three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament (St. John’s, Kansas State and Marist). Eva...

Brrrackets

No way! St John's the #3 seed and ranked 14th in the country meets Creighton the #14 seed in Norman Oklahoma sub-regional in the first round. What are the chances? St John's was on a tear at the end of the regular Big East season beating UConn, WVa, Villanova and Georgetown, beat Louisville in OT in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals eventually losing to UConn in the semis. Creighton will have their hands full but they had their own improbable run beating the MVC #1 seeded Missouri State to advance to the finals where they beat Drake for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Creighton is a pressing/trapping team that likes to slow down their opponents with end to end defense. When we saw Nadirah face the Rutger's trap earlier this year she shredded it with her ball handling ability. Creighton's RPI and strength of schedule don't compare to St John's. Should be interesting. Princeton got a #9 seed which I think is kinda crazy considering they ju...

Selection Monday

Tonight we get to see how they are seeded and where they end up. St Johns should get an at large bid and a high seeding... a 4? Be interesting to see how high of a seed Princeton Tigers get. I would think an 8 or lower. Creighton will probably get a very high seed, maybe a 14 or 15? Which regional will they be in? Will anyone be in Bridgeport Ct close enough for us to see?

Carrie Moore Dancing!

GO BLUEJAYS! GO COACH MOORE! Creighton Women's Assistant Basketball Coach Carrie Moore is dancing with her Blue Jays! Tritz, Nelson and the Jays just won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship! Great defensive team. Had to pull off some upsets along the way. GO C-Mo! #33! " The women of Omaha defeated Drake 53-38 in the final of the Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball tournament Sunday at Family Arena, and, like their male counterparts a week earlier, earned the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The women will learn the identity of their opponent tonight. The fourth-seeded Bluejays (20-12) have won eight of their last nine games, losing only to Drake (18-15), but had been snake-bitten in the conference tournament. Creighton made its fourth appearance in the final since 2007 but won for the first time under coach Jim Flanery. "There's no comparison," Flanery said. "It's much different. There...

A Birthday, A Rematch, Two Champions

GraceAnne turned 13 on Saturday! Yay Grace! I still remember the first day I met her... she was just a squirmy little blip on a sonogram. Much bigger and more amusing now 14 years later. St John's beat Louisville last night and has a rematch tonight with UConn in the Big East Tournament semi-finals. Should be a great game. Grace got to workout with Laura at St Johns last Thursday and we'll see her again this Thursday. Hopefully she will have a BIG smile! Yesterday GraceAnne's Swarm team won their sixth game in 8th-9th grade Island Garden Super League in a blow-out. The win clinched a spot in the playoffs which begin March 14th. First AAU Tournament is March 24th-25th. Congratulations Ashleigh on winning the Nassau County A Championship! Grace's friend and teammate Ashleigh Sheerin's North Shore Varsity team won the Nassau County A Championship on Saturday. Congratulations to Ashleigh and to my alma mater North Shore. The game will be televised this afte...
