Win/Win
Nice!
Went to see St John's v Hofstra on Friday at the Mack center. Grace brought her friend Aniya who doesn't follow basketball. I wasn't sure she would have fun but it turned out to be a fantastic game! I found myself cheering for both teams alternately but really pulling for individual players more than anything else.
Nadira McKenith is an amazing player and fun to watch. She has a heavy load to carry with Da'shena Stevens out hurt but she has really picked up her scoring in the two games since we last saw the Red Storm against St Bonaventure. Friday night it wasn't enough but I would take her at the point any day.
Shante Evans had an amazing game for Hofstra with 27 points and 14 rebounds. She seemed to somehow come away with every rebound when it really mattered and dominated the offensive glass. Jen "Big Love" Blanding couldn't counter her because when she entered the game Marie Malone came onfor Hofstra and kept her busy. It seemed like both coaches were trying to play match-ups and in the end it was Hofstra that got the better of St John's. Towards the end there was a little while that both teams had 5 guards on the floor.
At one point Gina McPherson threw Nicole Capurso to the floor and that seemed to get the Hofstra players as well as the crowd into it. It was a back and forth game with Hofstra out hustling and ultimately outshooting the Red Storm for a 93-82 victory that was much closer than the score would indicate.
Hofstra made some crazy shots including what must have been at least 5 3s from Katlyn Loper. Nicole ended up with 14 points, Candice Bellocchio 12 points 12 assists and looked tough, confident and in control all game at the point. For the Red Storm Nadira McKenith had 19 and Gina McPherson 22. Shenneika Smith had 18 points 9 rebounds and made one of the best plays of the game when she stole the inbounds pass and hit a jumper at the halftime buzzer to put St John's within 45-44 going into the break. Hofstra players and fans were pumped after the win and Grace got a chance to get down to the floor, say hi and congratulate Nicole before she made it to the team room. Very nice night.
