St John's Workout

GraceAnne and I went to see LuHi scrimmage Christ The King on Saturday afternoon right after her first official JV practice. It was great and we got to see some really talented kids, especially all the underclassmen. Some very impressive players including Sierra Calhoun who is definitely for real. The speed at which they play is the most obvious difference as far as "next level".

GraceAnne's Hudson Storm team won their second game of the season on Sunday in what was a very hard fought victory. I had the privilege of coaching and I really do mean privilege, this is an extremely nice bunch of girls that have worked very, very hard. I was relieved to get the victory because I felt like it was a team we should beat and I didn't want to let the girls down.

Sunday's game also marked the end of an era. Our longtime point guard, and GraceAnne's good friend, Grace Stone has moved on to greener pastures. Stone signed on to be team manager for the Long Island Lutheran varsity girls basketball team. Her schedule doesn't permit her to practice with the Storm any longer so Sunday was our first game without her. She is a great player and a wonderful teammate so we are definitely going to miss her. I'm looking forward to seeing her continued success and I hope the girls will be teammates again in the future, she's a great kid!

Immediately after the game we hustled out to St John's. Graduate Assistant Laura Barry had reached out to some girls a few weeks back, including GraceAnne, to offer some basketball instruction. We got a chance to meet or, at least say hello to Laura after the St John's v St Bonaventure game last week and agreed to train on Sunday at 2:00. Our noon game had ended around 1:40 so we fleeeew down the Northern State and arrived just after the scheduled time.

Grace was in a very positive state of mind after playing well in the victory and I think that carried over to the workout. In spite of being tired she got an hour in of shooting, ball handling and making moves to the basket. Laura seems extremely nice and she was really good with Grace especially considering they had just met and Grace was at 3/4 speed after the game. Laura asked several times what Grace wanted or thought she needed to work on. That's a great thing to hear in the first session. Rather than just plowing ahead it shows she's looking to get Grace what she needs. We're going to try to work out a schedule and see if we can get Grace out to Taffner Field House regularly.
