Turkey
A workout at St John's, a Glen Cove Jr Varsity scrimmage, a clinic at St Dominic's and another Storm victory were a few of the basketball related activities over the long Thanksgiving weekend. I'm thankful Thanksgiving is over until next year.
On Wednesday Grace worked with Laura Barry at St John's. She went over a variety of offensive moves as well as shooting. Lots of change of speeds, exploding out of crossovers, inside out dribbles a few ball fake to step through low post moves.
Lots of NCAA action over the weekend. Hofstra went to Cancun and won two games, St John's went to the Bahamas and lost two games, Princeton stayed home and won two games... we stayed home and ate turkey.
Saturday morning bright and early GraceAnne and her JV teammates boarded the bus at Glen Cove High School and headed to Wheatley for a scrimmage. The girls played extremely well! I think they "won" 3 out of 4 quarters. Coach Corinne Turner played the four 7th graders together and individually and they seemed very responsive to everything she was trying to get them to do. She has a way of getting them to understand what she wants/expects from them. I have a very good feeling about what Corinne is doing and what she is getting out of the girls so far.
Later in the day we headed to St Dominic's in Oyster Bay for a free CYO clinic. Amara and Tristyn went as well and all three seemed to have a good time. They did a few stations and played a competitive game of "watermelon". The St Dom's coach was enthusiastic and she seems to want to try to put a good program in place. Catholic league on Long Island is a shark tank and Dom's has been at the bottom for a while.
Sunday Grace's Storm team won at home in a very strange game that ended in a much closer score than it should have been. The Storm dominated for most of the game and then just faded late in the second half. Leading by 7 with three minutes left they started throwing the ball away on bad passes, bad decisions and poor shooting. They seemed to panic when faced with a very weak half court trap. They rushed, didn't protect or value possession, took unnecessary shots early in their possessions, fouled, didn't move the ball... it was ugly but it was a win. They are now 3-3 and play the same St Thomas team again this weekend.
