This Week
Interesting week so far. On Saturday 12/4 GraceAnne worked with Brittany Hunter. It was a lot of fun to watch Brittany take her through a whole progression of post moves, jab steps, pull up jumpers, reverse layups, etc.. I recorded enough so that Grace will be able to do the workout on her own. Brittany explains everything in a very clear and accessible way that Grace seems to understand easily. Its one thing to be told to do something, execute a move, and another to understand why you are working on what you're doing, why there is a right way to do it and why it matters. I'm kind of amazed at how much of what Brittany is teaching Grace she immediately applies in a game. Hard to know if she's thinking it through or if the repetition and muscle memory just kicks in, probably both. Whatever it is its great to watch.
Later Saturday we came back to Glen Cove for an open gym with Storm teammates at the high school. Only four of our girls showed up but it was the core players and they had a great workout. Grace did a few of the moves Brittany taught her earlier in the day but didn't really take advantage of the opportunity to work on them.
Sunday night Grace's CYO team lost their first game of the season. It was a little annoying because the game was in Smithtown, about 50 minutes away, at 8:15 at night on a school night. The officials were bad, every call seemed to go against us with the Storm tacking up 30 fouls for the game.... yes I said 30. Down 17-2 at the half Storm went on a 21-6 run in the third and beginning of the fourth to tie the game but then the refs killed the momentum with ticky-tac and some truly mysterious foul calls while our girls kept getting hammered going to the basket. Poor officiating aside the team really lost because of their inability to score in the first half. Grace had a pretty good game and the team never gave up so the effort was there after the slow start. Certainly Grace's effort was there. A "good" loss and a learning experience. Game ended after 10pm and we got home at 11... that is WRONG to do to 11 year old girls on a school night and Remi and I will NOT be doing it again until we think Grace is mature enough to understand where the real priority is and that is with SCHOOL. CYO should not have scheduled it but we as parents made the decision to attend and in retrospect it was the wrong decision. This parenting thing is still a work in progress after 13 years, always will be.
St John's campers reunion night is tonight. Woody and Stone are going to the game so it should be fun. We had a nice time last time we went. They are playing Seton Hall.
Workout with Brittany on Saturday which both Grace and I are looking forward to. Super League game Saturday night at Island Garden.
