Kim Barnes Arico Camp

The Grace's have been attending the Kim Barnes Arico camp at St John's University in Queens this week. Kim Barnes Arico is the head coach at St John's, the team that beat the Princeton Tigers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. The girls like it. The first day they whined. Typical of every camp they've ever attended on the first day. After day three on Wednesday the reports were a bit different, "hey dad I won two games!", "I'm the scorer on my team which is great, we're having a lot of fun!", "Oh! Let me take this txt from my new friend at the St John's camp she is soooooooo nice!".

When I was there Monday afternoon it looked like the girls were having a blast and it was obvious that Kim Barnes Arico was very hands on and involved with all that goes on during the day. She was coaching and encouraging the girls and working directly with them. That's a great thing! At some other camps the person actually "running" or directing them is far less involved with the actual hands on instruction.

From what I gather from the Grace's as well as Rikk Stone our girls are getting some attention for being some of the better players. Instead of doing stations today they had the opportunity to workout with Megan Duffy, Notre Dame '06, WNBA Lynx, Sparks, Liberty, who is one of their coaches.

What I like best is that each day GraceAnne comes home and tells me she is defending a 10th grader, or that she scored on an 8th grader, or that she was banging in the paint with a huge 7th grader. That's exactly what she needs to be doing right now, playing against bigger, stronger girls and knowing that she can hold her own and compete.

Last night we had a Lightning practice at Glen Cove High School. It was nice to see the team again and to see the girls working together. Good to watch the newly confident Amara and Evangelia as well as Stone and Woody. The Grace's worked a beautiful pick and roll to perfection! First time I've seen 'em do it!

Next week our little local playground league starts on Tuesday night. The park where they will play is very pretty and near the water, has a restaurant, it should be a nice way to spend a couple evenings a week for the next month or so. Many of GraceAnne's teammates are doing the Game7 Camp at Glen Cove Middle School the following week. Grace isn't sure if she wants to go and I'm not going to push her, she's got enough basketball going on. She's looking forward to an "adventure" camp I put her in to break it up.
