Portledge School girl’s carsity basketball team culminated its successful 2014 season by winning the Independent Private and Parochial Schools Athletic League title by defeating the Waldorf School of Garden City, 43-37.
This is the fifth consecutive year Portledge School has claimed this title and the last, as next year Portledge will move on to the Private School Athletic Association League.
Star Portledge point guard Tamara Simpson also passed a personal milestone during the championship game, scoring her 2,000th point. Simpson plans to attend Yale University in the fall.
“She worked well within our system, made everyone around her better, and still managed to achieve a great personal goal,” said Portledge coach Walter Amadio. “She’s been an exceptional player who has meant a lot to this program. She allowed our team to compete at a level that we hadn’t before.”
The victory qualified Portledge to play in the NYSAISAA Class C state tournament, where they defeated York Prep in the round of 16, but ultimately fell to No. 2 ranked Hackley School in the quarterfinals.
The Panthers finished the season with an 18-5 record and ranked No. 7 in the New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association.
