Long Daze...
Sunday the 13th was a long day...
11:30 am - Pro-Hoops Workout, Buckley Country Day School, East Hills
2:00 pm - LuHi vs St Mary's, Long Island Lutheran, Brookville
7:30 pm - Rising Stars AAU Try-out, Long Island Lutheran, Brookville
Tuesday Grace had a varsity game that they lost by 1 with 7 seconds left. Missed opportunity. Interesting sequence to finish. Down one with 15 seconds left. Woody hits a put-back to put Glen Cove up by one. Grace's teammate steals the ensuing inbound pass. Glen Cove now has the ball, up one, 12 seconds left, shot-clock off.... coach has a timeout left but doesn't use it to settle the girls and instruct/teach them how to finish up one.... kid drives to the basket rather than eating the ball and killing the clock forcing the team down one to foul, shoots and misses, defensive rebound, long outlet all the way up the floor to beat the defense back... opponents score a layup with 7 seconds left. Stunner. Coach probably wishes he called that time-out. Oh well, back to the gym. Hope they are more motivated by the experience and get a good workout in.
Grace had a try-out for Rising Stars. Bethany Le Sueur is the director. She seemed like she did well, enjoyed herself in spite of being tired... and I like Bethany and the way the program is set up. Sounds like it will only be 5 tournaments (we did around 20 last season... too much) and practice once a week. That sounds like our speed right about now. I think they practice at LuHi which would be very convenient.
Lots of decisions to make. The varsity season has been kind of weird so far. Woody is playing the four. Her natural position is probably the three and she's had more success there. Played the summer and pre-season at the three and averaged almost a double double. Seems like she got pushed to the four to make room for too many guards. It would be nice to see her get some touches at the three since she has put in soooo much work on ballhandling and shooting but, it is what it is. It's the coach's decision. If she stays at Glen Cove it looks like she will play the next four years at the four. A good challenge and it will make her tougher but some of these girls are 5 yrs older and HUGE.
