Respect

Respect is an interesting concept.

“It’s not so much the journey that’s important; as is the way that we treat those we encounter and those around us, along the way”

What is respect?

1. A feeling of appreciative, often deferential regard; esteem.
2. The state of being regarded with honor or esteem.
3. Willingness to show consideration or appreciation.
4. respects Polite expressions of consideration or deference: pay one's respects.

How do you get it? Most would agree that respect is earned. So, how do you earn respect? You give it, sounds weird right? Give something away in order to get it... it's like a boomarang. You first and foremost have to respect yourself, nobody will respect someone that doesn't respect themselves, that is a fact. Give yourself respect. Now, here's the hard part, you then have to respect others, you must value, accept and acknowledge those that you wish would respect you.

Here is an explanation of respect that I think is very close to the truth.

"On a practical level respect includes taking someone's feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration. It means taking all of these seriously and giving them worth and value. In fact, giving someone respect seems similar to valuing them and their thoughts, feelings, etc. It also includes acknowledging them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting their individuality and idiosyncrasies."

So, to value, accept and acknowledge someone is to respect them. Sounds pretty simple. So, that's all I have to do to be respected myself? Pretty much... the system tends to break down when there is asymmetry. Either someone feels they deserve respect they truly haven't worked to earn or, someone truly has worked hard to earn respect but still isn't getting it. These imbalances are usually caused by emotionally needy people and it's time to walk away or avoid the inevitable confrontations that result. Believe me, I've had kindness, deference, respect taken for weakness more than a few times... that doesn't mean I'll ever stop doing it. I consider it good fortune when I can leave those folks behind.

Why is respect important.... in life but also in basketball? Respect is critical to working cooperatively and collaboratively if you want to reach a common goal. Teammates don't even have to like one another (it helps!) as long as the respect is there. Most obviously, players must have respect for coaches and, as I've already stated in order for that to happen, coaches must respect, value, acknowledge and accept their players.

Amazing how much basketball is just like real life!
