Woody Buckets

Grace had one of those weekends you wish you could bottle up and save a little of... sprinkle a bit out every once in a while when you need it.

Friday, great practice, very physical, banging with Moffit and Jasmine for rebounds. Saturday Woody went into Brooklyn with Grace Stone to check out her Rose Classic games with the Baldwin team at Bishop Ford. Ran into a bunch of old teammates. Came home and played really well in a loss against a tough Saint Vincent DePaul team... mostly Floral Park and Sewanaka varsity starters as well as Kaela Hillaire from LuHi.... Kaela is a small, very quick freshman pg who transferred from Floral Park this year. In the past week and a half we have seen her play in five games with three different teams.... she's young, so she has some growing to do for sure but she is going to be a good one. Very fun to watch.

Sunday started out freezing cold with the Pancreatic Cancer Walk at Jones Beach.... straight to LuHi for a pre-season bootcamp style clinic at noon with Coach Slater. Woody got a lot of encouragement and instruction. Had a good conversation with Coach and he gave me a lot of encouragement, impressed with his approach and relationship with his players. Very well run clinic with Leon Martin helping out and a very nice mix of girls. GraceAnne's shots were falling and you could see she was feeling it in spite of being tired.

From LuHi we went to CW Post for the Alzheimer's Nassau Suffolk All Star Game. Grace saw lots of the girls she works out with, some teammates past and present.... the Long Island basketball community was well represented... Jay Hernandez who she's training with was there... her buddy Moose from G7, her teammate Tori played a scrimmage during halftime... Oh! And, there was a game. Very cool to watch the current crop of LI stars. Boogie, Mei Lynn, Tylah, Hillaire... point-guard explosion!

Just enough time to get something to eat and some homework done before her CYO game. Took all her hard work and training to the floor in this one. Switched between the 3 and 4 for most of the game, did well and looked very comfortable transitioning between the two positions. Played great defense and scored going to the basket and drawing fouls. Finally put the other team away late in the second half and coach put her at the 1. Fun seeing her play the point! Ran four consecutive clear-outs and she delivered every time, drawing fouls, getting inside for the score, following her own miss for a put-back, making the right pass. She was happy. Got poked in the eye on a drive and had to leave the game with a min or two left. Most fun was watching her take the ball up, finally using all her ball handling skills... afterwards she says "I just wanted my defender to fall once, I got her off balance so many times but I just couldn't get her to fall".

Open gym with Glen Cove Varsity Coach Gus Sirakis tonight at the middle school and then back to the lab... Pro-Hoops Academy with Jay Hernandez is one of the very best things she's done... came along at an absolutely perfect time in her development.
