Having Fun at Hoop Mountain in W Hempstead
Fun weekend for Grace! She played extremely well in all six games.
Style of play for the two teams she played on were very different. She likes the ball movement and transition offense of her G7 team which presents her with more scoring opportunities. She is also meshing well with her Lightning Lepore teammates and becoming more confident and aggressive.
On offense she was driving and taking shots with confidence knocking down several jumpshots, drew lots of fouls and converted most of her free-throws. She has also become a very capable defender at all five positions. Haven't seen her asked to defend the point much prior to this weekend but she did an excellent job when asked to do so. I have never seen her block as many shots as she did this weekend, never. She is learning to control the ball after the block and on several occasions just grabbed the ball out of the air on the shot for a steal rather than block. She went down hard a few times especially on a play where she attempted to draw the charge but got called for a blocking foul. Got up and shook it off without any complaining. Really good effort, exceptional attitude. Looked like she was having fun out there. If she keeps playing and practicing with the same intensity she is going to make tremendous improvements to her game.
She especially enjoyed facing Tom Catapano's Lightning team out of Baldwin twice. Fun scrappy team. Got to play against her buddy Grace Stone which was a lot of fun to watch. Very different players with different skill sets but I get a real kick out of both, especially having seen them develop from such a very young age. After the second game GraceAnne said she ended up listening more to Coach Catapano than she did her own coaches. She knows most of the girls on the team and the coach would name the girl then call the play sometimes describing what he wanted them to do. Grace said "he didn't realize he was speaking my language calling for screens and curls and I was able to pretty much anticipate everything they were doing". She got cocky late in the game and started to jump into the lane attempting steals and, while getting several, also got burned a few times on the gamble.
Joe Tartamella, new St John's Head Coach has added his staff for 2012-13. Grace will be attending two of his camps this summer.
