Three Games Three Wins

GraceAnne played her very first game of High School basketball this past Saturday. She did very well and the team won in a come from behind thriller. They started off very slowly but ground out the win taking the lead for good in the fourth quarter. The four 7th graders are the heart of the team but that's not to say the rest aren't contributing in a big way. Interesting thing is this team can only get better. Many of these girls have not played real basketball before and non of them have had a coach that played DI ball.

From Sewanhaka High School we went straight to West Hempstead Middle School to play the same St Thomas team the Storm CYO team beat last weekend. This time the Storm took an early lead and were up by as much as 14 before panicking late in the fourth yet again against a weak press and half court trap. They held on to win by 4.

Sunday it was out to St Agnes in Rockville Center to meet a team we have not seen before. This was an absolutely crazy game. Crazy games are quite often the result of incompetent officiating and this game was no exception. St Agnes ran a full court press where they trapped the first pass... no problem there, we're used to that. What seemed difficult for the girls to get used to was being fouled so consistently every single time they touched the ball. No exaggeration, no blood no foul. You could hear the unmistakable "SLLLLAP!" of skin on skin numerous times, nothing. Jump balls being called while players grabbed our girls by the arm. Seemed odd since our big got called for two rather mysterious fouls within the first two minutes of the game. This is not a "bad" thing for our girls, it helps them to concentrate, stay tough and play through all the contact. It does make it difficult to actually win the game though. Lots of turnovers and there were a couple girls who didn't look like they wanted to have anything to do with receiving the inbounds pass. Long story short, the Storm won by a single point in overtime with only four girls on the floor after three of our girls were fouled out by the officials. I don't want to say our girls fouled out because they didn't, they were fouled out. Woody got called for an offensive foul while she was driving to the hoop and a girl came over and literally whacked her before bashing into her and knocking her to the floor. It was bizarre. The game should not have even been close.

Storm plays St Agnes at home next Sunday and hopefully the officials will be better. Grace also has two JV games during the week.
