Bronx & Rockland Tournaments
The last two weekends GraceAnne has played with her Game7 sixth grade team in AAU tournaments. She's having fun, really likes the team this year, great parents great kids and all eight games were a lot of fun to watch.
In the Bronx Lady Hawks Tip Off tournament the team went 3-1 blowing out the first three opponents and then being over-matched by an extremely talented 7th and 8th grade Brooklyn Saints team. It was a privilege and a great opportunity just being on the floor with an older more experienced team as good as the Saints.
The core is the same but Grace's team has matured since last year and even since the CYO season. They share the ball, look to pass first and all the girls seem to trust one another... most of the time. Great help on the defensive end. On offensive, when there is ball movement it becomes contagious and any player that doesn't "buy in", over dribbles, holds the ball or takes selfish shots when someone else is open stands out like a sore thumb. Lots of ball movement in the wins, some of it truly beautiful to watch. In their only loss they seemed to lose their composure in the first half which led to 16 turnovers. Only one turnover in the second half in which they played a much better, tighter game against what was just a much more poised group of girls.
This past weekend the team again went 3-1 in the Rockland Rockets Drive to the Hoop Tournament. Again they had three big blowout wins and then lost in the final, Championship game. Unfortunately it was a game they could have won against a Future Stars team we have seen before. Missed layups and very poor shot selection led to a stagnant offense although the defense held up very well. The bigs had their hands full matching up against some of the biggest girls we've seen. The team seemed to forget that ball movement was what got them to the championship game and the offense suffered.
GraceAnne played well in both tournaments although she became very frustrated in the Saints loss. She blocked some crazy shots, wish I had a few of them on tape... she also named her chasedown block "The Dream Crusher" which I thought was pretty funny. I can tell she's having a lot of fun this season. Next AAU tournament will be on the 30th-31st in Philadelphia.
Grace has also been having lot of fun working out with the Glen Cove Varsity coach Gus Sirakis three days a week after school in intramural basketball. Proud she sought out the intramural thing on her own and has been very committed to it.
