Madness!
So, a bunch of the teams that GraceAnne has followed and feels invested in are in post season tournaments this year. The UConn Huskies, St John's Red Storm, Princeton Tigers, Marist Red Foxes all made the NCAA tournament. We will be watching the games that we can and rooting for all of them to do well! Grace watched the selection show and is filling out her brackets for the very first time so we are having a lot of fun anticipating and talking about the upcoming games.
Another team that Grace follows, the Creighton Blue Jay's didn't make the NCAAs this year but extended their season by being invited to participate in the NIT! Congratulations Jays! Congratulations to first year Assistant Coach Carrie Moore! It would be great to see them go deep into the tournament!
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball team will play at Northwestern on Thursday in the first round of the postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament it was announced late Monday night. The Bluejays will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in the WNIT. The Bluejays and Wildcats will tip at 7 pm inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Bluejays (18-12), who lost to Wichita State in the quarterfinals of the MVC Tournament last Friday, are led by first-team all-MVC guardKelsey Woodard. The senior is averaging a career-high 13 points per game this year and ranks third in the MVC with 66 three-pointers made to bring her career three-point total to 259, which ranks sixth in MVC history. Woodard ranks ninth in school history with 1,472 career points and averages 14.8 points per game in six career WNIT contests.
MVC Freshman of the Year and honorable-mention all-conference guardCarli Tritz averages 11.3 points per game and leads the team with 97 assists and 67 steals, while second-team all-MVC forward Sam Schuett adds 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and is one of only two players in school history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocked shots in a career.
Northwestern is 18-13 on the season, posting a 6-10 record in Big Ten play before losing 56-25 to Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament last week. The Wildcats were 12-3 in non-conference games, including 8-0 in non-conference home games this season. NU is led by senior Amy Jaeschke, a National Player of the Year Candidate and the Wildcats' first Big Ten First-Team honoree since 1998. The 6-foot-5 center is averaging 21.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, while she has 99 blocked shots on the season.Creighton, which finished tied for second in the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season with a 12-6 mark, is appearing in its seventh WNIT in the last nine years. The Bluejays won the 2004 WNIT and advanced to the 2003 WNIT Final Four. The Bluejays are appearing in their ninth postseason WNIT, have won one WNIT game in each of the last three years and have hosted one WNIT game in each of the previous two seasons. The Jays are 13-7 all-time in the WNIT.
The Bluejays are 3-2 all-time against Northwestern, including 1-2 under head coach Jim Flanery. The Jays and Wildcats last met on Nov. 19, 2005, a 93-77 NU victory in Evanston.
The winner between Creighton and Northwestern will play the winner of Alabama at Memphis.
