The past week

Nice week. Weren't too overwhelmed with basketball stuff. GraceAnne played well in a win on Monday night in her CYO travel league to bring the team's record to 7-0. The team they played probably shouldn't be in the A division but they were very nice kids and played hard all the way to the end. It gave the second unit a lot of time on the floor and they really played well. Wednesday the girls practiced hard but only for an hour. On Friday Grace got a fantastic report card with all 90s and most grades in the high 90s! Teachers had lots of nice things to say about how hard she works and what a nice kid she is.

Sooooo, to celebrate on Friday night we went to see the St John's women's basketball team absolutely crush the Columbia Lions. Megan Duffy, Coach Kim Barnes Arico's assistant coach, was nice enough to leave tickets for us so the whole family went and we had a great time! We met Coach Duffy when Grace attended St John's camp over the summer and she was extremely nice. GraceAnne really liked the way Shenneika Smith played, Nadirah McKennith and Desheena Stevens also had very good games. It was fun to watch them make such simple one on one moves and shake their defenders so easily. There was a chance to meet the players afterward but Grace had a game early the next morning so we couldn't hang around.

Saturday morning at 9:00 we schlepped to Island Garden in West Hempstead to play a 7th-8th grade Garden City team. When we came into the gym Grace turns to me and says "UH OH!". The girls were huge.... and not just tall either. One kid had to be pushing 6 feet. Turned out that they weren't very skilled and were poorly coached so looks can be deceiving.

Grace battled on the inside the whole game and really had her hands full. Loads of blocked shots, some nice ball handling in the open floor, drew some fouls. Came away with a 36-17 win.

Game tonight at home against St Rose which is the second place team in the A division with a 4-1 record. Should be a battle, I think Grace's LI Lightning teammate McKenzie is on this team and she's pretty tough. This weekend Grace might play in a 3 on 3 tournament at St Dominick's but otherwise there are no games and no training.
