I've been getting a lot of questions about Grac'e trip to Russia this spring so I dug up a couple of old articles that were published in local newspapers at the time.
Basketball Star Heads To Russia
By Jill Nossa -
0Glen Cove High School junior GraceAnne Woods has been selected for a prestigious SportsUnited: Basketball Ambassadors of Today and Tomorrow full scholarship overseas exchange trip, and will travel to Russia from April 22 to May 1.
According to SportsUnited, Woods and 12 other finalists will engage with peers overseas through the common bond of basketball, expanding their understanding of each other’s culture and country while advancing their skills in becoming open-minded and successful citizens of the world.
This initiative is funded by the SportsUnited division of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, (ECA), and is administered by RAF in collaboration with Andrei Kirilenko’s initiative School 2.0, with the support of Russia’s national Student Basketball Association and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
“Giving the citizens of our two countries an opportunity to learn from each other and realize that we share the same goals and hopes for the future is at the center of all of RAF’s programs. We are thrilled to bring this life-transforming opportunity to New York’s students and coaches,” said Rina Kirshner, vice president of Russian American Foundation.
“Learning about different cultures is such an important part of life. I am happy to partner with RAF, in order to make the globe a little bit smaller for some special young people and coaches,” said Timofey Mozgov of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
SportsUnited, ECA’s division devoted to sports diplomacy, taps into sports diplomacy’s ability to increase dialogue and cultural understanding between people around the world. Sports Diplomacy is an integral part of building relations between the United States and other nations. Participation in sports teaches leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that help young people succeed in all areas of their lives.
RAF was founded in 1997 with a non-partisan mission to encourage interest in and understanding of Russian heritage, as well as to promote reciprocal interest in American heritage in the former Soviet Union.
