The Rundown
Busy, busy, busy. RVC G7 camp was great! GraceAnne had fun and worked hard all week.
Friday night we went straight to the city from camp for her CAS Panthers "Say No To Drugs" Summer League game. Absolutely poured down rain so we had to play indoors on a court about the size of my living room. No joke! Spectators were a good foot into the action on the sideline, I considered going for a steal at one point on an opposing player. Backcourt violation was the opposite endline. Had a lot of fun playing against her old team Game7 Hudson.... yup, all the way to Harlem to play a team from around the block in a teeny, tiny gym while it's pouring rain outside... LOVED IT! Only lost by 7 which was pretty good considering it was a very good team and we haven't had a stable line-up or any practices. Play well against good competition and you get better... that's what it's all about!
GraceAnne attended Lightning Elite (there's that word again) Camp at Island Garden Sunday through Wednesday evening. Never seen her work so hard at a camp before. Long Island Lutheran girl's varsity basketball coach Rich Slater ran the camp and it turned out to be a very good one. He seemed to have a way of motivating all the campers to put in their best effort. I was impressed. Woody responded and put in a great effort during drills and stations, played with the big girls and more than held her own. That'll be good for her when she goes into the varsity season.
She's been working on her intensity and focus and doing a very good job of it. Coach Slater's camp definitely helped. The effort carried over to her workouts with Laura Barry at St John's Taffner Field House on Monday and Wednesday. She maintained game-speed throughout both sessions and wasn't afraid to go hard and make mistakes.
Friday back to Children's Aid Society Frederick Douglass Houses in Harlem, this time on the outdoor court for a 7:00pm game. Really a fun place to play under the lights between the buildings with a nice crowd. What basketball should be! Girls came out slow but Grace did maintain that same intensity she's had the last week or so going aggressively to the hole and finding open girls. Stayed in a 2-3 the whole game but still got some opportunities to play some solid defense. Kept up the momentum during Sat afternoon game as well. Starting to get a consistency of focus and effort.
Grace made an interesting decision I didn't expect. She's going to play CYO Tyro for St Hyacinth's. Most of her varsity team is playing and said she wanted the opportunity to gel with them before the season. Also wants to play for Kevin McCombs in the Island Garden Fall League which means she's not playing for her Lightning Lepore team anymore.
The Lepore roster looked absolutely huge, someone said as deep as 16 girls.... how, what, why? At least four new girls and I think we were 11 deep so Grace probably made the right decision. Smaller roster means more time on the floor, more touches, more progress. Mary is a good person and there were some extremely nice parents and a great group of girls. It was the perfect place for Grace to be for the AAU season this year. Grace had a lot of fun and we wish them all well.
In the midst of this busy, busy week we also made it over to G7 home base at St Mark's on Thursday night for an excellent workout with Nicole Capurso. Wood was definitely challenged so we're going to try and see Nic more often.
