Last Spring Game7
Yesterday was the last Game7 Bootcamp of this spring session. The girls got to meet Jason Fraser Amityville '02, Villanova '06, after the session (see the second video below, 3 minutes in). I'll miss taking Amara, Evangelia, Woody and Stone out to Rockville Centre on Sunday afternoons. They got quite a few good workouts in and I know all four of them have been working on the skills and drills at home that Marc and George have taught them. They are all better basketball players for their experience at Game7, no doubt about it. More than that I really appreciate all four of them in a different way after seeing how they approached the sessions.
Evangelia is a great kid, very tenacious with a great attitude. Having started playing ball two years after most of the other girls does put her at a disadvantage. Many of the fundamental skills that she needs the most work on aren't covered in team practices anymore. Never-the-less, she never put her head down, never got discouraged, never complained, tried her best to do every single skill even though some were a little beyond her skill level and worked very, very hard. Determined/tough kid with a fantastic attitude that will always serve her well in basketball and in life. I'm looking forward to seeing what she brings to the floor the next time the team plays, bet I see more than a little Game7 in there.
Amara just seemed to be having fun the entire time. Some of the drills were tough on her but she just kept smiling and doing her best. She goes hard at least 99.9% of the time and of all the girls you could see the most difference in Amara's game from session one to session seven. She is starting to develop some handle and is becoming more confident seeing the whole floor. Her confidence level is getting up there, she even cracked the starting 5 while we were at the Princeton Shootout! You have to want it, push yourself and be self motivated if you are going to improve through training and you can see this girl wants it. Amara is smart, a very quick learner and it's obvious that she has been working on her skills in the driveway and park at home. Great kid who is willing to work hard and enjoying the payoff of becoming a better baller.
Stone and Woody do what they do... they go hard and continue to improve on a steep curve, although Woody did get a little casual at the end, then again I'm harder on her since she's mine. Marc teaches kids how to learn the game themselves the right way, how to go about their business, how to go hard to get the most from yourself whether you're training, practicing with the team or playing in a game. In these bootcamps he's not training kids as much as he's teaching them how to train themselves and how to take the game and the concepts he teaches them home with them. He preaches that hard work gets you where you want to go the rest is up to them.
Game7 and Marc Von Essen have absolutely been worth the weekly trip from Glen Cove, if you want to crack that starting five or just want to teach yourself to train smarter and harder Game7 is a great way to go. We'll be heading back out to Rockville Center for the next Boot Camp whenever it is scheduled.
